This week I had a shoot with my favourite girls from my 'Threads of Rural Innocence' project.
They have been asking for ages to do a beach day-inspired photoshoot, as living on the coast is such a big part of growing up where they do. Also, I just think they want an excuse to go swimming! ᵕ̈ But since the weather has been warmer we decided to do it this week as our first shoot back. I thought I would share some of my inspiration and what I do to plan/prep for a shoot, as well as some of the outcomes.
"VERBENA SS21" photographed by Raquel Chicheri has been an inspiration throughout this project but I began to look at it more closely since I have a shoot with a similar concept. I love the playfulness that comes through in these images while still being able to understand the story of their village. The vibrant colors and dynamic compositions evoke a sense of joy, while simultaneously inviting viewers to appreciate the cultural nuances and narratives woven into each scene. As I prepare for my own shoot, I aim to capture a similar blend of whimsy and authenticity.
For every shoot I've done for this project I have filled out a shoot plan, I found templates online and then made my own based on what I felt I needed to organise. Once I had filled this in, I sent it to the girls so we all knew what we were doing, where we were, and what the shoot might involve.
After it was all planned out it was time for the more fun jobs such as picking out clothing, props etc. I first raid my own wardrobe and then head around the local charity shops.
The shoot went amazing! Living by the coast is such a major part of growing up in the village. The isolation of the village, embraced by the sea, made summers feel limitless. Rockpool discoveries, sand dune climbing, the laughter of friends echoing against the backdrop of seagulls. It feels almost woven into us so it was so fun to capture just a part of that.
I didn't put too much pressure on this first shoot back, I more wanted us to all enjoy being back together taking photos and getting back into the routine of doing it. It's been almost four months since our last one!! This lack of pressure not only from myself but also from knowing this isn't for a class or lecture was great! It made it more rewarding and fun.
That being said I definitely got some photos I am proud of and have already set aside to display along with the others at the upcoming local exhibition! Here is a sneak peek. ᵕ̈
Thanks for reading! Love always,
